Gynaecology Care Oxford is here to listen, inform and support.
If you are insured: Most insurance companies won't accept a claim without a referral first, so it is always best to check with the insurer before booking an appointment to see us. We can, however, see you without a referral, if you are planning on paying for your own care (self-funding).
Please arrive on time. There is underground parking at the Manor Hospital. Once you arrive – check in at the reception desk. If you have come by car and left your car in the car park, there is no charge for the parking but do input your car registration on the tablet located near the front desk, to be issued with an electronic permit in order to avoid getting a ticket.
On average the typical appointment time for new patients is approximately 30 minutes, however each patient's care is individualised and we strive to give each patient the time they need.
If required this will be requested and arranged after the consultation, and likely performed on a separate day by a consultant radiologist. The radiology department will contact you directly about that appointment, date and time.
Absolutely, a friend or partner is most welcome during your consultation. However, if you are going to have an outpatient treatment or surgery, they will not be permitted access to the room while the treatment is being carried out – We ask that they wait in the waiting room.
The doctor will take a medical history. You may also be asked to provide a urine sample. You will then be offered a physical examination depending on your problem.
There will always be a female chaperone (member of the hospital staff) present during this intimate examination to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the process.
Typically, the physical examination will include an examination of your tummy, plus an internal (gynaecological) examination. This almost always includes a speculum examination to visualise the vagina and cervix (also known as the neck of the womb). A two-finger digital examination is routinely performed in order to gather additional information about the womb and ovaries. This may feel uncomfortable but is usually not painful.
Lastly, depending on the problem you presented with, you may have swab tests or a cervical smear test done.
After the examination, you may also be required to have some blood tests taken by the nursing staff. This could involve a short wait, so please factor this additional time in for your hospital visit.
Having your period may affect your consultation but there isn't a straightforward yes or no answer to this question. It is always best to check with our office beforehand if you are concerned about this as, we can advise depending on the situation.
If a treatment is recommended you will hear from our secretary, Zoe who will inform you of the necessary arrangements. If you are insured, Zoe will provide the relevant procedure code required by your insurer. If you are paying for your own care, Zoe will fully outline the costs for our services.
